Breathable waterproof footwear is most likely to get sweaty and wet on the inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric or leather absorbs water, the footwear’s breathability will be reduced. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your footwear must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed with Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM.
When you’re active and wearing footwear, your socks wick moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry. However, if your footwear absorbs water and becomes saturated, its breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapor won’t be able to escape through the material, so your feet will feel clammy and wet. Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM adds Durable Water Repellency (DWR), which prevents water absorption while maintaining breathability, keeping your feet dry and comfortable
Anyone who is active outdoors in damp or wet conditions will benefit from breathable waterproof footwear. Whether you’re a mountaineer, cyclist, dog walker, or you work outdoors as a farmer or surveyor, you’ll need good footwear.
Your footwear may be soaking up water simply because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning GelTM, and if it is fairly new or has recently been re-waterproofed, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalized just by cleaning. However, once the footwear has been thoroughly worn, you’ll need to reapply DWR using Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM, after first cleaning it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning GelTM.
Alternative waterproofing products are often solvent-based aerosols; alternatively, they may be water-based and contain fluorocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer.
Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM is a safe product to use on breathable, waterproof combination footwear. It is completely non-flammable, contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and is fluorocarbon-free. Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM has been specifically designed and optimized for fabric and leather combination footwear, providing Durable Water Repellency (DWR) while maintaining breathability. You don’t need to wait for your footwear to dry before applying it.
Using the right cleaning product is just as important as using the right waterproofing product. Conventional detergents leave behind a thin, water-absorbent film on materials, which masks their Durable Water Repellency (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning GelTM. Remember that dirt itself works against DWR, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.
Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM is quick and easy to apply; simply spray or sponge it onto wet shoes. Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM provides highly durable water repellency (DWR) that develops as the shoes air dry. It leaves a flexible water-repellent treatment on the individual fibers of fabric and leather. This allows moisture vapor to pass through, maintaining breathability and keeping your feet dry. Nikwax Fabric & Leather ProofTM has been specifically designed and optimized for footwear made from a combination of fabric and leather.
Nikwax takes great care to minimize the impact of Nikwax products on the environment and on you, the consumer. Nikwax waterproofing products are water-based, non-aerosol, non-flammable, non-hazardous, and environmentally friendly. They contain no harmful solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and are completely free of fluorocarbons (which have been shown to persist in the environment and have been linked to serious health issues).
