Ballistol Universal was developed in 1904 and has been manufactured in Germany ever since using the same formula, retaining its excellent properties for over 117 years. BALLISTOL has been manufactured and sold worldwide for more than four generations. Originally developed for the Imperial Army as a weapon maintenance oil, BALLISTOL soon became an indispensable household remedy in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Millions of consumers have used and experimented with BALLISTOL, thereby discovering a surprising number of ways and situations in which it can be used, including for humans and animals. In 1874, Friedrich Wilhelm Klever, a lawyer with an interest in economics, founded the F.W. Klever chemical plant in Cologne, Germany. He began producing coal-based oils and greases. To ensure independence from raw material suppliers, he purchased a coal mine. Around the beginning of the 20th century, the Imperial Army needed a multipurpose oil that would be suitable not only for maintaining and cleaning the metal parts of weapons, but also for maintaining wooden stocks and leather equipment. At the same time, it was to serve as an ointment for soldiers to treat minor injuries, cuts, and bruises. It was then that Dr. Helmut Klever, a chemistry professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and son of the founder of the Klever chemical plant, succeeded in developing the formula for this special oil. He coined the name BALLISTOL by combining the technical term “ballistics” with the Latin word for oil, “oleum.” And in just a short time, BALLISTOL established itself as a “miracle oil” due to its incredible, often miraculous properties. The oil was used by the German army from 1905 to 1945. The BALLISTOL brand name has survived all historical upheavals to this day and has become a byword-a technical term-among hunters, shooters, anglers, and many others. It is no exaggeration to say that BALLISTOL has become synonymous with quality and versatility.
