Today marks the 15th anniversary of TRC Knives. If you’re familiar with our knives and their names, you know that we’ve always drawn inspiration from great figures in history. In particular, the story of Roald Amundsen inspired us to create the Polheim knife. What can be accomplished in 15 years? Inspired by Fridtjof Nansen’s Arctic drift in 1893-96, the young Roald Amundsen dreamed of becoming a polar explorer. In 1896, he joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition for his first research adventure in Antarctica. From 1897 to 1899, the *Belgica* became the first ship to overwinter in Antarctica. Later, in 1906, he became the first explorer to complete the legendary Northwest Passage by ship alone. From Greenland to Alaska aboard his sloop “Gjøa”-what a milestone! And finally, in 1910, he set sail on his schooner *Fram* to reach Whale Bay. On December 14, 1911, after traveling 1,334 km in Antarctica, he established a base camp at the South Pole and named it Polheim-“Home of the Pole” in Norwegian. All of this took place over the course of 15 years. So, what better choice for our knife to mark Polheim’s 15th anniversary?
