Taking this idea a step further, why not offer a series (team) of blades featuring various exotic and recently discovered steels? This way, steel-obsessed knife enthusiasts can try, test, and use something that isn’t typically available in the industry. What is Spyderco’s “Mules” Team? The “Mule Team” project was created as a simple and affordable way for “steel junkies” to test different blade steels for themselves. Each series will feature a different, interesting steel. Each series will have the same model, a fixed blade, uniform thickness, grind, and edge, and will be heat-treated to the optimal hardness for that steel. The blade is leaf-shaped, with a sharpened and finished PlainEdge cutting edge, but with unfinished handles, allowing for customization. The unfinished handle features a series of holes for attaching a custom handle or for wrapping with cord. No handle, ferrule, or lanyard is included. This not only saves you money but also gives you the opportunity to make (or have made) custom handles and liners. Spyderco plans to release several variants each year, using the same fixed-blade model made from various exotic steels. Each steel series is limited to approximately 600 pieces and is engraved to indicate the steel used. The variations are reasonably priced, with the only variable cost being the steel itself. Spyderco’s thirty-third project for the Mule team features Crucible Industries CPM REX 76, an ultra-high-speed steel produced via the particle method and heat-treatable to HRC 68-70. Designed for specialized cutting tools requiring high abrasion resistance, high hardness, and good toughness, its alloy composition is characterized by high levels of carbon, vanadium, molybdenum, and cobalt. Enhanced through the CPM process, this advanced blend of elements provides excellent wear resistance, fine grain size, and uniform distribution of carbides throughout the steel. Discontinued by the manufacturer, this product is no longer available.
